UMTS is an umbrella term for the third generation radio technologies developed within 3GPP. The radio access specifications provide for Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) variants, and several chip rates are provided for in the TDD option, allowing UTRA technology to operate in a wide range of bands and co-exist with other radio access technologies.

The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation mobile cellular system for networks based on the GSM standard. Developed and maintained by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), UMTS is a component of the International Telecommunications Union IMT-2000 standard set and compares with the CDMA2000 standard set for networks based on the competing cdmaOne 3GPP is the standardization group for mobile networks and is in existence since 1998. 3GPP specification come in bundles called “Release”. 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 3GPP releases are from Release 99 to Release 7.

UMTS uses variable spreading and power levels to provide different user data rates. In FDD mode 10 msec frames are used The number of chips per bits is called the Spreading Factor (SF) and define the data service required for the user: T bit = SF x T chip For UMTS: Bit Rate x SF = 3.84 Mchips/s (Chip Rate) SF can change in every 10 msec frame Telcom 2720 26 3GPP specifications.

3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) antog BICC i UMTS Release 4-standarden, som publicerades år 2001. BICC tillgodoser de flesta kraven för GSM-  UMTS is not just about radio: the radio access network connects to the core network which is an evolution from the GSM core. 3GPP has expanded its capabilities, in principle allowing most services to be delivered over either 2G GERAN (GSM/EDGE) or 3G UTRAN. In June 2020 3GPP TSG RAN WG6 was closed and from this time onwards, this UMTS mainentance is carried out by 3GPP TSG RAN. The UMTS frequency bands are radio frequencies used by third generation (3G) wireless Universal Mobile Telecommunications System networks. They were allocated by delegates to the World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC-92) held in Málaga-Torremolinos, Spain between 3 February 1992 and 3 March 1992. The 3G technologies developed by 3GPP were called W-CDMA or UMTS and utilized a 5 MHz bandwidth carrier, whereas 3GPP2 technologies were called cdma2000 and utilized a 1.5 MHz bandwidth carrier. The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), based on the GSM standards, is a mobile cellular system of third generation that is maintained by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). It specifies a complete network system and the technology described in it is popularly referred as Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA). In 1998 Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was formed to continue the technical specification work. 3GPP has five main UMTS standardisation areas: Radio Access Network, Core Network, Terminals, Services and System Aspects and GERAN.

Developed and maintained by the 3GPP, UMTS is a component of the International Telecommunications Union IMT-2000 standard set and compares with the CDMA2000 standard set for networks based on the competing cdmaOne technology. UMTS uses wideband code-division multiple access radio access technology to offer greater spectral efficiency and bandwidth to mobile network 3GPP UMTS Specifications and Management. In order to create and manage a system as complicated as UMTS or WCDMA it is necessary to develop and maintain a large number of documents and specifications. For UMTS or WCDMA, these are now managed by a group known as 3GPP - the Third Generation Partnership Programme.
